Projection
…
Identification
This tactic is very personal and speaks to the incompetence of the party using it, as they are unable to view their own shortcomings[xiv]. This tactic is an attempt to avoid accountability and offload the emotional burden on someone else.
Example
An example would be, “You obviously are lying to me on your walk away,” when the speaker is actually lying. This is also seen often in relationships, when a cheater will accuse their partner of cheating.
Solution
Dealing with this is tricky, as the projector will not be persuaded, but embarrassed. This must be viewed more as a tell. The more accusatory, emphatic, and loud the allegation, the more likely it is to be a projection. Deny an untrue allegation, but remain silent on one that is true. Ask questions in response to reveal their truth.
