Identification

This personal tactic involves getting third parties to advocate your point to get a concession. Triangle participants are often being manipulated by the person who pays their bills.

Example

Triangulation occurs at a literal level during many community meetings when three persons of the same mind will sit spaced equally around the table. During the discussion, when the same point is made by all three advocates, it looks like consensus and is persuasive.

Solution

Build your own triangulation by leading with the truth of your position. Preempt the discussion by developing a relationship with highly persuasive people, and pay attention to where they are placed physically at the meeting. Plan accordingly and call out inconsistencies and how it is against the interests of the participants to accept the triangle-master’s position.
